June Random Facts

It’s been a while for these, too! I’ve done so many of these that I worry about repeating one. =) Happy reading.

  1. In eighth grade I won the school and district spelling bees and got to advance to the county level. We competed a Skyline High School in Dallas. I think I came in ninth after misspelling “leucitite“. I also won my school spelling bee in fifth grade, but I lost at the district level. That time I missed “grammar”.
  2. I have trouble remembering things that I hear, especially if I hear lots of info at once. For that reason alone, I could not be a pilot or a Starbucks barista.
  3. On my nights off, sometimes I go to the local discount movie theater and watch scary movies for $1.75 since Jenny doesn’t like them.
  4. Part of me hopes I have a good excuse to get in a fight someday so I’d know how I would do.
  5. I enjoy poker but am not very good at it so far. Part of my strategy has involved being unpredictable to throw off the competitors who actually know what they’re doing. But I’ve been studying strategy and playing online in case I decide to play in Vegas.
  6. During a trip to New York during college, I ate in a cafe near the stuttering lawyer from My Cousin Vinny.
  7. One of my profs got busted for child pornography. I always thought he was kinda weird and creepy. I also didn’t like him because he gave me a B in World Cultures III. I didn’t suspect the kiddie porn at the time, but it didn’t surprise me when the news came out.
  8. I think the war on drugs is unwinnable and not worth fighting. Ditto for the war on terror. Our government cannot rid the world of every thing that’s unpleasant. Let’s spend all that money on problems we can actually help to solve, like the energy crisis and poverty.
  9. One time in high school I played paintball with my youth group. Although I had welts on my legs for days afterward, they were totally worth it.
  10. I think pregnant women are sexy, but I can’t explain why.

Random facts about me, Jenny

Andy always gets to do the fun random facts post, so I thought I’d use a few quiet moments to do my own:

1. I am pretty low maintenance most of the time, but I’m high maintenance when it comes to food. I’m extremely picky.
2. I have a weird attraction to kid’s movies, especially the Muppets.
3. We’ve started watching our niece Reagan two days a week. This seems to take more juggling and coordination than all of my Project Specialist events combined. But I love putting them both on a blanket on the floor and watching them stare at each other!
4. Somewhere along the line my cat, Jedda, got the nickname “shebba” – I don’t know what it means but that’s what I call her now.
5. I’m really not brand loyal to anything but Kraft mac and cheese and Strawberry Pop Tarts.
6. I haven’t worn heels in years. I’d probably fall over if I put a pair on.
7. Some of my favorite websites:
www.thepioneerwoman.com
www.cuteoverload.com
www.televisionwithoutpity.com
www.icanhascheezburger.com
www.pandora.com
8. I love video games, but I can’t play them well. At all. It’s sad. So I settle for watching Andy play very well and win. However, I do ok at Guitar Hero and Rock Band.
9. I have a very good sense of direction. My sister once called me her personal GPS system.
10. I don’t get upset or stressed easily, but I freak if I’m put in an unfamiliar big city and my internal GPS doesn’t work. That’s one of the few things that makes me crazy.
11. I’m one of those freaky people who actually enjoys shopping on Black Friday.
12. I hate hate HATE the phone. The only two people I’ll talk to for more than a few minutes is my mom and sister, because I don’t get to see them as often as I’d like. I think I get that from my dad – he hands the phone over to my mom the minute he answers it.
13. I have no sense of style. I can’t put a good outfit together unless I involve friends and family. Right now, that’s not a bad thing, since it would have spit up all over it anyway.
14. I’m having a really hard time remembering the words to nursery rhymes, so I’ve been singing Christmas songs to Brenden before his naps. That might be weird after Christmas.
15. Since we started CARES, I’ve tried out more new recipes and cooked more big meals than I’ve ever done before. Our poor residents have become my recipe guinea pigs.

Random Facts for December 2008

Here is the December edition of Random Facts About Me:

  1. At an Italian restaurant, I order lasagna. At a Mexican restaurant, I order enchiladas. That’s just the way it is.
  2. In elementary school I ate cold grilled cheese sandwiches for lunch. Don’t ask.
  3. I still wear a pair of brown Doc Martens boots that I got as a freshman or sophomore in high school. I hate spending money on clothes, especially when the ones I have still work. By work I generally mean cover some part of my body without looking terrible. Jenny says I have to get new boots because the right one has a hole in the toe.
  4. I get emotionally attached to my cars. Possibly because I name them. When one leaves the family, it makes me sad, even though I know that’s silly.
  5. Although I can do it, public speaking stresses me out. I hate being the center of attention.
  6. Except for chipping off a tiny piece of my left big toe, I have never broken a bone.
  7. The older I get, the worse my memory gets. I now blame it on Brenden since he can’t defend himself. Ditto for my time management skills. I used to pride myself on always showing up on time to things. Now I’m doing well just to remember to show up.
  8. When I’m mad at someone, I practice yelling at them in my head, or even out loud if I’m alone. Rarely do I get the chance to actually say all the things I’ve practiced. Sometimes that’s a good thing. Sometimes not.
  9. I would probably get Lasik on my right eye if someone else picked up the tab. (I take PayPal if you’re interested!)
  10. When I get to heaven, I want to ask God for the details on how he created the universe. Are the 6 days in Genesis literal days or figurative periods of time? Is the earth thousands or billions of years old? Did the different plants and animals appear instantly at his word or evolve gradually over time?

Random Facts for Oct

More random facts about me:

  1. Coworkers and family members often assume that I know more about computers than I really do. I try to set the bar low, but it doesn’t work.
  2. My senior year classmates voted me Most Likely to Win the Nobel Peace Prize.
  3. Also during senior year, I competed in a prom fundraiser called the Ugly Man Pageant as “Adrianna Box”. The pageant consisted of evening gown, talent, and Q&A competitions. They wisely chose to skip the swimsuit competition. My talent was singing “Young Hearts Run Free” from Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet film, complete with dance moves. I wore a little blue dress. Unfortunately I didn’t win. Top prize went to a state champion wrestler who wore a backless leopard-print leotard.
  4. I continued Trick-or-Treating through high school. One year my friend and I went as Beavis and Butt-Head. Obviously I was Butt-head.
  5. Oct 23 is my 30th birthday. My dad was 30 when I was born. Assuming we live long enough and Brenden graduates, I will be at least 48 when he finishes high school.
  6. I have gone skinny-dipping. It was fun.
  7. My musical taste is extremely eclectic. My CD collection includes Metallica, Acappella, Kenny G, Sarah McLachlan, U2, Kenny Rogers, Mozart, Josh Groban, and Pink Floyd.
  8. Over my lifetime, I have kissed a total of 6 different girls.
  9. When I see people throw cigarette butts out their car windows, I am tempted to pick them up and throw them back in. So far I have resisted.
  10. I attended President Clinton’s second inauguration in January 1997 through a great program called Presidential Classroom . I had voted for Bob Dole, but it was still a great experience.

More Random Facts

Here are 10 more random facts about me:

  1. I started at Southwest about 2 1/2 months before September 11. With no fulltime work experience, practically no seniority, and a job (tech writer) that many in the IT business don’t value highly, I probably would have been out the door at any other airline in the country. But Southwest chose not to lay anyone off, earning my lifelong loyalty with that one action.
  2. So far I’ve visited 10 different foreign countries: Barbados, Belize, Canada, Cayman Islands, France, Jamaica, Martinique, Mexico, Netherland Antilles (St. Martin/St. Maarten), and the UK.
  3. If you and I are grabbing a quick meal together, there’s a good chance I’ll suggest Chipotle. Try the chicken burrito with chili-corn salsa. Mmm…
  4. I think I am addicted to sugar. I crave it. Jenny got me a 1lb bag of M&Ms earlier this week. It’s already gone.
  5. I enjoy horror movies, even though I know they are terrible and I shouldn’t like them because they are so bloody and violent. Being scared is fun every now and then. Generally I have to watch them alone because they don’t work well for Date Night.
  6. When I find out someone smokes, I instantly lose a significant amount of respect for them. I wish the government would impose a nationwide ban on smoking within public buildings and triple the cigarette tax. Then they could use the tax revenue to help people quit.
  7. If I couldn’t be a dispatcher anymore, I would want to work in Schedule Planning, the department that hammers out Southwest’s flight schedule.
  8. The way our contract is set up in terms of pay and seniority, the longer I stay in Dispatch, the less likely I am to leave. Some call this the “golden handcuffs”.
  9. I constantly debate with myself whether to save, spend, or give away our disposable income.
  10. My sister and I used to catch jellyfish in sand buckets and bury them on the beach. I don’t know why that seemed like a good idea, but it was fun.

Random Facts About Me for Today

By request from my lovely bride, here are ten more random facts about me. I hope I don’t run out of these!

  1. I hate makeup and wish no one used it, except possibly in theatrical applications. Ladies, you don’t need makeup to be beautiful!
  2. In no particular order, my favorite beverages are water, Coke, coffee, and wine. Three of the four are diuretics. Hmm.
  3. I have a huge mole on my scalp just above my right ear. Until I shaved my head, only a few people knew it was there because it wasn’t visible.
  4. My political views don’t align well with any party, which makes it hard to vote. I think the person is more important than the party and can’t stand straight-ticket voting. I think America would be better off without political parties.
  5. Growing up, my favorite toys included Pound Puppies, Legos, my bike, and Nintendo and Super Nintendo.
  6. Traveling is one of my favorite hobbies, particularly cruises because they are so easy. Someday I would love to cruise Alaska, Hawaii, and the Mediterranean. And maybe even Antarctica.
  7. Due to limited competiton, I was voted Best Supporting Actor in high school for my performance as John Brooke in our one-act version of Little Women.
  8. I auditioned for the role of John Brooke partly because I would get to kiss the girl who would play Meg, John’s love interest.
  9. Right after college, I sang bass and baritone for a year with the Irving Chorale, a great local choir. Since the group comprised mainly retired people, I was by FAR the youngest singer there. I think there was one guy in his 30s. If you like choral music, I recommend attending one of their shows.
  10. I prefer singing bass because A) it’s a relatively easy part (just hit the lowest note in the chord) and B) my sightreading skills aren’t great. I can sing baritone or even low tenor, but it wears me out both mentally and vocally. I miss choir and would rejoin one if I had time.
